Volvo Trucks Researching Fuel Cell Technology

Truck maker Volvo AB and Norwegian oil company Statoil ASA are starting a joint venture to develop hydrogen-powered fuel cells to run highway trucks, a key issue for freight drivers in North America.

The research could lead to trucks that operate with fuel cells within 15 years, said Goran Wirmark, a spokesman for Volvo’s technology division in announcing the move on Monday.

Rather than using gasoline or diesel, fuel cells run by mixing hydrogen and oxygen. They do not give off dangerous air emissions. Volvo’s fuel cells would be designed to extract hydrogen from diesel oil carried on the vehicle.
