05/17 (LWN) This week has seen a substantial deterioration of already-unfriendly relations between Caracas and Washington. The U.S. government issued trade sanctions prohibiting the sale of weapons to Venezuela and added Venezuela to a list of nations of “concern” in the War on Terror. Venezuelan President Chavez responded by threatening to sell his nation’s American F-16 fighter jets to Iran and accusing the U.S. of breaking its contract to provide aircraft parts. At the same time, Chavez suggested that he may price oil exports in euros, as Iran is expected to.
