The conflict between the West and Moscow bears a growing resemblance to the Cold War period.
The competition most obviously emerges in the field of energy. The United States (US) and the European Union (EU) have added to their efforts to by-pass Russia to deliver energy resources to Central Asia and the Caucasus through Turkey to Europe.
Searching for an alternative to obtain energy following the natural gas crisis in January between the Russian gas giant Gazprom and Ukraine, the western world considers the construction of a trans-Caspian pipeline that will stretch from Central Asia across the Caucasus to Turkey.
