Echoing the concerns on the soaring food prices across the world, the UN Economic and Social Council has suggested to reconsider the use of food crops to produce biofuels among key elements of a strategy to confront the current food crisis.
The proposal figures in a 15-point plan discussed during an intergovernmental debate about soaring food prices opened on Tuesday.
“We are urging governments to seriously reconsider the policies to produce biofuels, so that food security is not put in danger,” the plan presented by ECOSOC president Leo Mero said Friday.
