With pump prices above $3 a gallon, Americans are paying more for gasoline and the situation could become even more volatile as global markets respond to troubling events around the world. In an effort to give consumers a break at the pump, Congress is poised to make a huge error in consumer protection.
The top priority should be to reduce U.S. dependence on imported oil. Congress needs to open up more of the Outer Continental Shelf, particularly areas near Alaska and Virginia that have substantial oil and natural gas resources but remain off-limits.
