Turkey Warns Cyprus to Cancel Exploration Tender

Turkey warned Cyprus to cancel an official tender for oil exploration and drilling rights off the coast of the divided island that it shares with a breakaway Turkish Cypriot community.

“We expect Greek Cyprus to end its initiatives to launch international tenders which violate the joint rights of the island’s two communities and amount to a fait-accompli,” Turkish foreign ministry spokesman Levent Bilman
said in a written statement.


“Continuation of the tender process will adversely affect peace and stability on the island of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean,” he added.

Bilman also urged companies interested in oil and gas exploration in the region to act with common sense and not to damage prospects of peace on the island.
