Recently, Nicole Foss of The Automatic Earth returned to blogging after taking something of a hiatus over the last year. I caught one of her recent pieces on the situation in China, and her partner Raul Meijer has been covering the situation in Greece extensively.
Besides the two ongoing clusterfucks of China & Greece, there’s quite a bit of ongoing collapse related to climate, the recent publication by James Hansen on Sea Level Rise, and of course the Encyclical by the Vicar of Christ on Earth, His Holiness Pope Francis, Chief Spokesperson for some 1.2B members of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, not to mention all the hubbub about Near Term Human Extinction…. clearly no shortage of Collapse Topics to discuss!
It’s been nearly 2 years since I first got together with Nicole to talk about Energy & Inflation & Deflation. So this seemed like a good time to do an update, and I nailed her down for another chat this week. She happens to be visiting with Raul in the Netherlands, so as a bonus in this conversation we got his input as well.
Now, for those of you expecting to get the normal “Just the Facts, Ma’am” type of presentation from Nicole in this Podcast, you may be slightly disappointed. There definitely are a lot of facts jammed into this hour of KollapsnikTM chat. However, because Nicole was chatting with both me and Raul, we kind of went off the rails a few times, and hilarity ensued. I decided to leave some of it in there for a little entertainment value.
The stuff I cut out is even funnier, but sadly not for public consumption. LOL.
Additionally, Nicole currently has a DVD in post production, discussing parameters of where you want to live, what kind of choices you can make moving ahead and so forth. We currently have up a Doomstead Diner SurveyTM on places you DON’T want to live, still OPEN. We’ll have a new survey up next week on places you DO want to live.
Anyhow, crack open a bottle of your favorite beverage and enjoy the latest in Collapse from the Collapse CafeTM on the Doomstead Diner and the folks from The Automatic Earth.

Just that the people need to understand that this is the model that we’ve been suggesting as to what’s going to happen is not a theory, it’s actually happening exactly the way we said it would. It’s just not happening everywhere at the same time because systems that are predatory pick off the little sick ones first. They work from the periphery towards the center as you said. But where we’re seeing things move more and more to the center now. And China has been the the global engine of liquidity for the last while, and drives demand for absolutely everything. That’s now tipping over the edge and we are going to see those same consequences manifesting in countries in the center that do not see themselves as being in any way comparable to Greece, but they are, they’re just not there yet. The same dynamic ends up operating there. But when we tell people what’s happening people, they tend to think “oh well that’s just my theory”, but it’s not a theory, it’s actually happening and will in the future a lot more places…
RE:
Yeah it’s an ongoing phenomenon it’s definitely not something that is projected or happening in the future or something like that, collapse is ongoing now, it’s happening and you can watch. You can watch it progress, you can see all the different places where it manifests itself. Greece is one of course and Puerto Rico now as well…
Raul:
Civil War…That makes me think… People think the French are very good at protests right? But they haven’t seen the Chinese. The Chinese do protests like nobody else does. (RE: Yea…they get serious about it…) because it’s very bloody, very violent and I’ve been writing about this for years. I don’t see how China can not end up in that kind of thing…

Nicole must be out of her little mind to claim that she predicted everything that is happening now. There is NO WAY that she predicted the current oil glut.

Last time I checked I hear 320 billion got spent to fix the Y2K ‘bug’. The hospital I worked at at the time went through every piece of biotech equipment at great cost to deal with that issue.
But in Nony’s mind it was a fantasy threat on par with resource depletion.

I’m curious what sort of personality disorder it is that draws cornucopians to a Peak Oil blog to post annonymously day after day after day. Kinda pathetic really.

Nony — You’re a doomer too, otherwise you wouldn’t be hanging out here all the time. But you’re a whimpering closet doomer, frightened to embrace the reality that you so intensely know is true. Your feeble attempts to argue the cornie POV are nothing more than frantic efforts to convince yourself against the reality that frightens you so much. Give it up, Nony. Tell your alliance of sock puppets to run up the white flag too. You’re fighting a losing battle. Embrace the horror. Ride into the future mounted on the great steed of doomer logic. Prepare to meet your destiny armed with the Harsh Truth of Doom and Grim Acceptance rather than the cowardly cornucopian denials that you daily espouse.

Plant she did predict the glut. She figured that the unwinding of the bubbles would lead to a slow down in oil usage exacerbated by the increase production from the shale oil boom.

The problem I have with Nicole is she will mainly only preach deflation..that is here meme and she is not going to change no matter what the circumstances….I have been following Nicole for about 8 years now and while I did buy into what she said in the past…I don’t anymore…The obvious facts are we just don’t know what is going to happen when the shit hits…anybody telling you otherwise has an agenda…we could very well have a hyper inflation situation and from the looks of government reactions I am starting to lean towards that…
Nicole tries to take what has happened in Greece and extrapolate to the rest of the world….and you just can’t do that…would the situation in Greece be different if all the countries in the world were collapsing at the same time? I think yes; and with the size of collapse she is talking about…housing falling by 90 percent…stock market collapse 50% unemployment….how are the banks going to stand up let alone governments? I know it is nice to feel like there is something that you can do but go tell the to the Russian Elites before the Bolshevik revolution…I think Nicole’s little rich whiteman compound with a buy in of $400,000 will be a huge target..Sounds great on paper until you think it out a lot further. I know that this will offend some of you but it is the truth…sorry but I just get a little tired of collapse for everybody but me because I have it figured out story….. I agree that Nicole has been right on some things her timelines are way off and she has been wrong on deflation….you want to predict what happens in a collapse and say this is what happens in the future you just show your ignorance of the complexity of the situation.
ghung on Mon, 10th Aug 2015 12:50 pm
Steve said: “I agree that Nicole has been right on some things her timelines are way off and she has been wrong on deflation…”
When price discovery has been subverted on a massive scale, globally, primarily as a result of the wprld’s largest economies taking unprecedented measures to shore things up, it’s not only hard to spot true inflation/deflation, the timing becomes problematic, to say the least. Where would things be if there had been no ZIRP, QE and other forms of intervention, on such a scale? Econ 101 no longer applies in any sense that simpletons like Nony insist it does.
It looks to me that true price discovery is returning to markets, and virtually all commodities are declining in price as demand stagnates and $trillions in funny money seeks something, anything, productive or not, to invest itself in.
Since, normally, deflation increases the real value of debt, we should see more debt default, or at least more available capital going to service debt. In a world where debt is going off the scale in may places/sectors, and in a world where intermediaries pay themselves first, deflationary inertia becomes chaotic and volatile. What has become clear is that none of the so-called ‘experts’ can get a handle on what some casually call a ‘super-cycle’.
Nothing will make sense as the industrial age collapses under its waste streams,, except, perhaps, in hind-sight.
Apneaman on Mon, 10th Aug 2015 1:06 pm
Those intermediaries will only get worse and they are already causing a lot of pain. I have a buddy who own a small niche winery here in BC and he is about to pack it in because of them and their never ending and increasing fees, fines and regulations. He built the whole thing from the ground up and sales are not his problem – the government/liquor board is. They are protecting their own positions and doing the bidding of big money.People will just give up and/or go underground and his employees will be SOOL.

We are at the peak yeast phase economically. We have begun the canibalization of our social fabric and economic structures. It is a typical phase per other civilizations and societies. What is different now is it is global, modern, and in the context of a human bottleneck.
The climate has been altered and all major ecosystems pushed to decline or local failure. In that sense we have gone into descent both inflationary in all that is real and physical and deflationary with debt and the mal-investment in commodities.
Commodities are both real and abstract depending on the context in the economic system. IOW we are entering the dysfunctional and irrational. We will soon see economic abandonment and social fabric failures. This is subtle, surreal, and all inclusive. We are a global people connected in this event with no place to run or hide.

The Crash of 2015: Now Arriving at Gates 3,7,12,19…..
“This is far from an encyclopedic review of the bad news that arrived at our gates last week. I have been assembling it for a week, and found that by the time a draft got to be a few hours old, much of the bad news had been replaced by worse news. And then of course I was waiting to hear how the Republican candidates for President would deal with these urgent and mounting threats. Still waiting. You heard anything?”

I agree with Steve about hyper inflation.
They are already printing money and give it to people. They don’t called it printing money.
They called it : student loan and student loan forgiveness program; modification of FICO credit score by making it easier for people in debt to borrow more money and buy a car.
Once the shortage of goods start happening, governments will change their mind and it is possible that money will be deposit in your bank account directly.
That will probably create hyper inflation and destroy the currency too.
Either deflation or hyperinflation will destroy confidence in currency anyway.
Look carefully at the system behaviour and they are already giving money for free and forgiving bad loan. One example is student loan.
Bank and economical system survival depend on debt. Bank will find a way to give more debt to people already in debt. Same applied to shale and tar sand oil producers.
Greece is about to receive a new bail out package.

I also have to add that I don’t believe buying a compound or trying to be self sufficient is a good idea. I think things will be so chaotic once the collapse happen that being nomadic seem to be the best approach.
Being nomadic allow you to be flexible where to live and how to adapt to ever changing conditions. You might be able to go with band of thief and kill and pillage too. Will be pretty easy to roam the land on bicycle with trailer and some tools to fix bicycle with you.
ghung on Mon, 10th Aug 2015 3:35 pm
idontknowmyself, Sure. Maybe you can trade your daughter for passage on an old fishing boat to Italy or something. I’m sure you’ll be welcome when you get there…. or hop the fence to Mexico.
Nomads/Gypsy/Roma generally aren’t welcome anywhere, but at least they have each other. Who will you have?
…. and I love how you guys always describe folks’ homesteads as “compounds”, as if we are all entrenched militant survivalists. Besides, self-sufficiency doesn’t mean anti-social loner but does beat the shit out of “insufficient” anyday. Better find a group that has a better chance (in a place that has a better chance) and make yourself useful.

BC says the collapse has already started and will be ended as we know it in 6 months. Well 5 months 1 week now. Anybody else jumping on that bandwagon? Your prediction?

Boat, it is a crap shoot short term but longer term the peak oil dynamics of Hills Group is calling 2020 a bad year for oils ability to power the economy.
In the short term human nature is key component through the financial system. The financial system could blow at any time or muddle along a few years. Your guess is as good as mine.

What, pray tell, does a lost culture of nomads that got squashed have to do with complexity and physics? And how does that exclude the many cultures which existed for centuries while staying put and cooperating with their neighbours? Indeed, the Cherokee of my area did exactly that. Didn’t work out so well for a while, but they’ll be glad to take your money at the nearby casino as you’re passing through.
Apneaman on Mon, 10th Aug 2015 7:07 pm
idontknowmyself, have you been practicing being a nomad? What is the longest amount of time you have spent wandering around the wilderness with no contact with civilization? Being a nomad, at least one that can survive, takes years of learning and practice just like anything else. I took survival courses when I was a kid, but that was just to get you through till the chopper came a whisked you back to home. Nomading is a way of life and if you did not grow up in it you better start practicing. Awesome video, now I just need to watch the whole series and I’ll be raring to go nomading. Got any youtube videos to learn me up some complexity and physics?
steve on Mon, 10th Aug 2015 8:42 pm
. and I love how you guys always describe folks’ homesteads as “compounds” sorry Ghung maybe I should call them rich white communes…I have no problem with them per say..the problem I have is when I see people preaching and others giving up everything to follow these prophets…..Who here will stand up and say they can say the exact time the crash will happen and what the outcome will be etc….if you say yes than you are a dumbass…..I know she means well but we just don’t know how this is all going to fall out…I remember getting so angry with the oil drum people saying they were going to sit on their front porch and watch the carnage with popcorn!!! As their pensions rolled in! How do you say worldwide systemic crash and BAU in the form of Banks taking you to debtors prison etc…With over 50% unemployment you better hope you are not one of the rich because the last thing you will see is that rope going over the lamp pole….
idontknowmyself on Mon, 10th Aug 2015 9:03 pm
I don’t have a good answers to your questions apnem. I am too old now and I won’t make long as a nomad. I might try it but don’t expect to last more then 3 weeks. A good bug out bag will probably help you at the beginning to lower your stress level. I made one but it is getting to heavy for me. I mainly put tools to work wood like an small axe, bow saw, snare wire, small fishing kits, small fire kits, synthetics clothing that dry fast ( no cotton, it absorbs too much water, dry slowly and will kill you by hypothermia).
fire: can use fire flint, magnifier glass, .
water: bleach for disinfecting, small cooking set for boiling water and disinfection, small vinyl tube to suck water,
food : fishing kits, snare wire for small games like rabbit, fox, knife, a spear made of cheap electrical tube could be useful against bear and some bigger games
shelter : axe, 12 inch long bow saw, rope,
clothing : synthetic clothing only especially in cold climate cheap polyester work fine too
travelling, : compass and methods using the sun and stars.
psychological preparation : really easy to star panicking when alone and start running in circle and screaming
Like I said, bicycle could be used at the beginning and provide a nice mechanical advantage.
If you can find older fisherman and hunter that will teach how to hunt, that would be nice too.
There is no good way to prepare. Human psychology have changed deeply because of oil. Human have lost their mental strength and survival attitude.
I have a get away bag, just in case the violence is too much and I cannot handle it psychologically. So I will take my bag go nomad. That will probably means death.
That about it. If you search, you will eventually find good info about survival. Stay away from fancy stuff like riffles and guns. Use tool to work woods instead of using a tents.
Bullets and guns are too heavy and will suck out of lot of energy out of you.
I hope my writing is readable.

idontknowmyself, good thoughts and advice. I’m too old (70) to pack more then 10-15 kilos for any distance, even if my life depended on it. I tote that much when I go shopping and that is only a few blocks. I have to stay where I decide to call home, come what may. My advantage to my friends and neighbors is a lifetime of experience in the skills needed to survive without BAU. I can teach those and maybe earn my keep. Good luck!
