Trucker Protest Runs Out of Gas

Independent truckers organizing a protest against high fuel prices hoped pain at the gas pump would drive 200 or more truckers to Washington Sept. 23. Instead, fewer than 20 truckers showed up for the rally and protest, and organizers blamed high fuel prices.

While those independent truckers drove from Landover, Md., to the U.S. Capitol, blaring horns and bearing signs saying “America is going broke because of oil,” another trucker was inside the Capitol urging Congress to pass a comprehensive energy plan.

“It is clear that our energy crisis is a complex problem that requires a comprehensive solution,” said Barbara Windsor, president and CEO of Hahn Transportation.

Speaking on behalf of the American Trucking Associations, Windsor said the United States needs a comprehensive plan that decreases demand for fossil fuels, increases domestic energy production and ensures transparency in energy markets.

“This dramatic year-over-year increase in the cost of diesel fuel is harmful to the trucking industry and the U.S. economy,” Windsor told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Her own company’s fuel costs have increased 55 percent over last year.
