To Boldly Go Where No Energy Consumer Has Gone Before

As man’s appetite for energy consumption has increased over our lifetimes, so has his apprehension of the future of energy consumption. This is no better demonstrated than in the realm of the science-fiction film. In these films, we often see three things which parallel American society today – optimism, abundant energy and the wasteful use of it.

Consider the highly successful series “Star Trek”. When this came out in the 1960s, the pre-oil shock fervour of that era was evident in the storyline of a future several centuries from now optimistically dramatised for us. We saw huge spacecraft bigger and far more powerful than anything constructed today. Within these future ships hummed warp engines dealing in terrawatt energies delivering faster than light travel to the serious traveller of tomorrow. We are talking about vehicles that probably consumed energy in minutes that our entire industry consumes worldwide over days and weeks.
