This ain’t your average survival shelter

There’s nothing new about predictions that the end of the world is upon us. But there’s plenty new about how some people are preparing for it.

What began as a pipe dream for Ron Hubbard has become big business…underground

“We call this the backyard bunker,” Hubbard said as he showed us one of his survival shelters.

These days, the fear market is booming.

“I can’t build them fast enough right now,” he said. “It’s better to have a shelter 10 years early than five minutes late.”

But unlike those Cold War-era concrete bunkers with just the basics, these survival shelters come fully loaded.

“It’s got everything a house does,” Hubbard said. “It’s just 20-feet underground. Luxury bedrooms, big screen TVs , game room, underground pool. You can have anything you want.” He’s even seen people put Jacuzzis in them.

Hubbard is selling safety and style in a world with no shortage of apocalyptic possibilities.

“In the ’60s,” he said, “they only worried about the nuclear attacks from Cuba and Russia. Now we have to worry about biological attacks, chemical warfare, terrorist threats, economic crash, nuclear fallout, nuclear threats from Korea and China.”

He acknowledged that when people think about survivalists and survival shelters, they think about folks who “might be crackpots. I thought there would be some looney tunes that would show up. But no, these are professionals.”

Like Robert Acosta, a Los Angeles businessman who’s banking on his own $85,000 bunker. “You gotta take precautions and you gotta look out for your family for the future…just in case.”

At worst, it’s a very nice guest house. “Yes, it is,” said Acosta. “When I have relatives that come visit, ‘Sorry, I only have three rooms. We may have to put you in the bunker outside.'”

Whether it’s missiles or melting markets, “it’s amazing what we can do underground,” said Hubbard. “There’s no limit.”

“I mean I hope it never happens,” he continued. “But mathematically, it all adds up to Armageddon.”

Down here, Armageddon can wait.

“Fall-out shelters” always make me wonder…

If Tea Baggers succeeded in collapsing not only the US economy but the entire world’s financial system, why would anyone want to survive a few week’s underground to only emerge to armed roving gangs in search of food?

How about biological attacks, sickening even one’s wealthy friends. The only people remaining were those
    attackers who immunized themselves.

To sustain such a delicate balance of ‘just in time’ food stocking, our infrastructure needs constant oiling.

If the USD, world’s reserve currency loses all value so does every fiat currency worldwide. Trade would become impossible on any scale worth feeding billions.

Instead of spending 80 Gs’ building an underground hide-out why not put in a garden or better yet, take an interest in irrigated farmland. Make that land far from a big city and don’t forget a properly sizes solar system plus wind and/or hydro and wind machines.

    Coming as close as we did to financial devastation this week it appears as Pogo always says;
“We have met the enemy… and he is us”

As one who’s put some thought into this sort of thing, I’m sort of neutral about these shelters. There are a lot of reasons to have a plan B besides the zombie apocalypse. Early settlers hid their families in the root cellar when unfriendlies were in the neighborhood. In a modern day crisis, letting the roving bands loot the house while secretly sheltering in the back yard seems like as good a plan as any. It depends on one’s level of paranoia I guess.

Some folks have a bug out plan, some plan to hide in plain sight, but in a meltdown or epidemic, these shelter-building folks are unlikely to be part of the panic problem, at least initially. Having the time and place to take stock of things means a lot. It’s the ones with no plan at all that are usually the problem.

So I say go for it if you have the money. Costs about as much as a nice swimming pool, and at least the grandkids will have a cool place to play.

i am proud to vote republican so that their policies make sure the rich will get richer and richer and a select few can afford luxury bomb shelters with big screen TV’s and hot tubs. the rest of us of course we get to die broke & poor on the surface during the armageddon, but its part of doing our duty for the elite rich people who get to have all the money for themselves. i think its great the rich people get to watch movies on big screen TV in their bomb shelters. then they dont have to come out until they have watched all the movies.

What happens when the supplies run out? Oh by then the shelves will be restocked at the Wal Mart Super Center and everything will be back to normal. The other benefit is by then we will have gotten rid of all those blood sucking, environmentalist Democrats…………………….Tea Baggers wet dream.

It would make a lot of sense if the ventilation system of the bunker could be used as part of a geothermal heating and cooling system for the house. Over 20 years, that would defray most of the cost of the bunker.
