As Roger Pielke Jr. noted in a speech I covered recently (see here, here, here and here), there are only four ‘levers’ we can pull to help our energy situation and reduce emissions of CO2. We can lower population or accept a lower rate of economic growth. Neither of those two will ever be accepted by the populace or the politicians they elect. Otherwise, we can increase the efficiency of the machines we use that consume energy, or ‘decarbonise’ the way we produce energy. It is obvious that these two methods are the only ones that are going to be used here and now. So we should be honest about it.
