In May, the World Economic Forum launched its ‘great reset’ initiative. In October, Time Magazine dedicated an entire issue to the idea. Just a week later, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva declared that the world was facing a ‘new Bretton Woods moment’.
Almost seven years ago, Amsterdam University Press published my book, The Big Reset. In it, I wrote: ‘A system reset seems imminent. The world’s financial system will need to find a new anchor around 2020. One day politicians will begin to understand only great changes can reset this system, which is being inflated to prevent deflation.’
A Chinese edition was published in 2015. The Beijing-based International Monetary Institute asked me to give a presentation on my reset thesis. My Chinese publisher suggested my speech be titled, ‘Waiting for 54 years’. That was how long ago the US had closed the gold window, in August 1971.
At that moment it became clear why the Chinese had decided to publish my controversial book. They agreed with my critical analysis of the dollar system. Soon after Lehman Brothers collapsed in 2008, China became concerned about the dollar-centred monetary system. Beijing pressured the US to exchange its mortgage-backed securities holdings to US treasuries. Washington agreed and soon after, China stopped investing in US treasuries. The Federal Reserve must now fill the gap, purchasing $2.4tn in treasuries this year. To hedge its large dollar position, China started to accumulate vast amounts of physical gold.
My book outlines some ideas to reform the international monetary system. There is a need to find a successor for the dollar. The special drawing right could serve as the new anchor for the monetary system. Change would require a new Bretton Woods conference, including to discuss debt restructurings. Gold could be re-introduced as one of the pillars of the global financial system.
Most of these topics are already in play. Both the United Nations and IMF are calling for debt restructurings, as are some European Union countries. US President-elect Joe Biden faces calls to cancel $1.7tn of student debt.
Last year, 22 countries added gold to their central bank reserves, a move not seen since 1971. Central bankers seem to be preparing for changes to our monetary system. In 2019, Bank of England Governor Marc Carney warned that the dollar was at risk of losing its status as the world reserve currency. He proposed the use of a new digital synthetic hegemonic currency.
I envisioned the big reset as a financial and economic overhaul. The proposed great reset seems to be an even larger project. The IMF says this endeavour could address most of the world’s major problems: health, education, gender equality and even climate change.
According to WEF Founder Klaus Schwab, co-author of The Great Reset, we must act fast. ‘The pandemic represents a rare but narrow window of opportunity to reflect, reimagine, and reset our world.’
This also explains the rush to test central bank digital currencies worldwide. After a quick roll-out they all can become part of the new synthetic hegemonic currency, as envisioned by Carney.
This SHC, based on five digital currencies (dollar, euro, pound, yen and renminbi), will be just like a digital SDR.

It is becoming more and more obvious that the EU intended to let the UK walk into the no-deal knife from the start. – A rapid deterioration in EU-UK relations and even outright hostility as the EU and UK will attempt to destroy each other and French-English mutual intimidation attempts over the Channel with jets and illegal French fishing in English waters and even blockades, where the EU has all the cards as the largest trade surplus block in the world and the UK the 2nd largest trade deficit country. Expect the UK to flee into the welcoming arms of the and sign any trade deal with the US.

“TERRIBLE new forms of infectious disease make headlines, but not at the start. Every pandemic begins small. Early indicators can be subtle and ambiguous. When the Next Big One arrives, spreading across oceans and continents like the sweep of nightfall, causing illness and fear, killing thousands or maybe millions of people, it will be signaled first by quiet, puzzling reports from faraway places — reports to which disease scientists and public health officials, but few of the rest of us, pay close attention. Such reports have been coming in recent months from two countries, China and Saudi Arabia.
You may have seen the news about H7N9, a new strain of avian flu claiming victims in Shanghai and other Chinese locales. Influenzas always draw notice, and always deserve it, because of their great potential to catch hold, spread fast, circle the world and kill lots of people. But even if you’ve been tracking that bird-flu story, you may not have noticed the little items about a “novel coronavirus” on the Arabian Peninsula.
This came into view last September, when the Saudi Ministry of Health announced that such a virus — new to science and medicine — had been detected in three patients, two of whom had already died. By the end of the year, a total of nine cases had been confirmed, with five fatalities. As of Thursday, there have been 18 deaths, 33 cases total, including one patient now hospitalized in France after a trip to the United Arab Emirates. Those numbers are tiny by the standards of global pandemics, but here’s one that’s huge: the case fatality rate is 55 percent. The thing seems to be almost as lethal as Ebola.
Coronaviruses are a genus of bugs that cause respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, sometimes mild and sometimes fierce, in humans, other mammals and birds. They became infamous by association in 2003 because the agent for severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, is a coronavirus. That one emerged suddenly in southern China, passed from person to person and from Guangzhou to Hong Kong, then went swiftly onward by airplane to Toronto, Singapore and elsewhere. Eventually it sickened about 8,000 people, of whom nearly 10 percent died. If not for fast scientific work to identify the virus and rigorous public health measures to contain it, the total case count and death toll could have been much higher.
One authority at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an expert on nasty viruses, told me that the SARS outbreak was the scariest such episode he’d ever seen. That cautionary experience is one reason this novel coronavirus in the Middle East has attracted such concern.
Another reason is that coronaviruses as a group are very changeable, very protean, because of their high rates of mutation and their proclivity for recombination: when the viruses replicate, their genetic material is continually being inaccurately copied — and when two virus strains infect a single host cell, it is often intermixed. Such rich genetic variation gives them what one expert has called an “intrinsic evolvability,” a capacity to adapt quickly to new circumstances within new hosts.”
