WWIII was initiated by the US, a nation with 4.5 percent of the world’s population that, until war’s end, was consuming over 50 percent of the world’s resources. At issue was the US attempt to dominate oil & gas supply, demand and transit. That had been an ambition since at least 1948 when George Kennan recognized that Post WWII US prosperity depended on oil & gas.
