Angry environmentalists demanded Wednesday that the government halt a proposed plan to build Thailand’s first nuclear power plants, forcing the cancellation of a scheduled public hearing on the issue.
“You build, we burn,” shouted some 200 protesters outside the Siam City hotel who insisted that the government’s 15-year draft energy plan — which includes a proposal for nuclear power plants — be stopped.
The hotel asked Energy Ministry officials, who had organized the public forum, to cancel the meeting, saying the protest was keeping customers away.
The ministry is considering nuclear power as one of its options in the 2007-2021 plan to meet growing energy demand.
Under one option, nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 5,000 megawatts would be built to supply electricity starting in 2020 and 2021. Other new power plants would use coal and natural gas.
