Tax Reform Stirs Controversy in Mexico

Mexico (Prensa Latina) The tax reform bill recently sent to the Mexican Congress by the Executive has triggered controversy even among those who, though deeming it viable, have found serious limitations in it.

The document faced its first hurdle in the Senate, with leader Manlio Fabio Beltrones, from PRI (Institutional Revolutionary) and Carlos Navarrete, from PRD (Democratic Revolution), who consider it incomplete.

Both congressmen warned that unless the tax-driven public solvency plan of Petroleos Mexicanos is modified, the initiative will not be as comprehensive as is required.

In their opinion, the change must secure larger investment in Pemex’s modernization and hydrocarbon production. They warned they won’t yield an inch in this regard because the firm’s finances cannot continue being squeezed.
