Drivers will pay more at the gasoline pump this summer than previously thought, the Energy Department said Tuesday in a report that also predicts oil costs will remain high through 2007.
Nationwide, retail gasoline prices will average a record $2.71 a gallon over the April-September summer period for regular. That’s up 34 cents from a year ago and 9 cents higher than the Energy Information Administration, the Energy Department’s statistical arm, forecast a month ago. In that time, the average U.S. price for regular gasoline has gone up more than 20 cents a gallon.
