According to a recently published scientific report by The Petroleum Affairs Division of the Department of Communications Marine and Natural Resources (Sunday Independent, May 20) on Ireland’s future energy prospects, there is real reason for optimism. We are on the verge of an oil and gas bonanza with resources under our Atlantic seabed having the possibility of transforming Ireland into a new ‘Middle East’.
It outlines potential volumes of over 130bn barrels of oil and 50tn cubic feet of gas pinpointed along an underwater ridge parallel to the West Coast and known as the Atlantic Margin.
