South Korea is the world’s fourth-largest crude-oil importer and imports all its oil to feed the energy needs of its rapidly growing industrial economy.
And it is the latest international entrant into the Alberta oil sands, where an estimated 174 billion barrels gives Canada the world’s second-largest energy reserves behind Saudi Arabia.
In the last two years, energy companies from France, China, the Netherlands, and the United States have all made major acquisitions in the region.
