SA will launch an investigation into the viability of the controversial activity of uranium enrichment, in a move that could draw criticism from western powers.
Minerals and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica said at the weekend that SA would undertake a cost-benefit analysis into the beneficiation of uranium.
Sonjica did not comment on the Iranian issue but said nuclear energy would play a significant role in fulfilling the world’s energy needs. Countries such as China and India are building a number of nuclear power plants and Russia recently announced a massive new nuclear-building programme.
In June, there were 27 nuclear power reactors under construction, mostly in Asia and eastern Europe, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
