South Africa: Gas shortage fuels fears

The gas shortage that has plagued the Western Cape for almost two months is causing havoc in the lives of many.

And with Chevron’s recent announcement that it will have no supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for another week, some restaurant owners fear their businesses will be severely compromised.


On Thursday Chevron said unexpected problems with the unit that produced LPG had led to the shortage.

“The Chevron refinery has found product quality shortcomings in the repaired unit. This will lead to a further delay in the restoration of the supply of liquefied petroleum gas in Cape Town,” read the statement. The company expects supply to be “severely limited” until next week.
