Shetland islanders fear for future as oil revenue dries up

LERWICK, Scotland (AFP) – Once rich from oil money which is now drying up, the inhabitants of the Shetland archipelago in the far north of Scotland are seeking new economic ways to survive.

The National Trust for Scotland has gone on the Internet to entice people and new money to the Shetland’s Fair Isle, a nine-square kilometre (3.5-square mile) island of less than 70 people.

“They are looking for two families to rent a croft,” said Douglas Irvine, who is responsible for developing the island.

“They advertized it on the Internet, with specification of what they would like. It’s like a job interview. They are looking for a family who could open a business which could benefit the community.”
