TheInfoPro has released Wave 2 of its Server Study, showing that server consolidation is the top priority for server professionals, while power and energy issues pose the greatest challenges. Ironically, spending on blades servers is expected to grow more than for any other hardware technology, enabling consolidation, but exacerbating the energy crisis, notes TheInfoPro (TIP).
…Looming Energy Crisis in the Data Center. Power, heat, cooling, and resultant system density are among the top challenges facing Data Center Operations. Users report that Energy Efficiency is moving from desirable to mandatory in many enterprises.
* 38% of users reported that “Power Requirements” were the greatest challenge to Data Center Operations, while 31% cited “Cooling Requirements”.
* The first, second, fourth and seventh ranked Data Center Operations challenges all focused on the tension between increased system density, decreased energy efficiency, and the rise in the cost of energy to meet the needs of IT.
* Despite their perceived advantage in achieving server consolidation, Blade Servers were cited as the worst offenders when it came to energy and thermal woes.
