Self-Reliance: The Solution To Peak Oil

Some believe that the way to solve our energy problems is to retain the same economy and lifestyle by using a different fuel, such as ethanol, nuclear power, solar, or hydrogen. Unfortunately, these easy sacrifice-free fixes generally have one or more major drawbacks: they are too expensive, can’t realistically produce enough energy to quench our ever-increasing demand, have serious safety concerns, or remain partially dependent upon non-renewable resources.

That being said, some of these options could be components of the solution, but they are not the solution itself. Without greatly reducing consumption, which is made ever more difficult by the world’s increasing population, there is no realistic alternative to high energy costs and eventual shortages. Things like CFLs, fuel-efficient cars, and recycling help to cut fossil fuel usage, but do not provide a sufficiently comprehensive solution.

People have become more and more dependent upon distant regions and countries for almost everything they need or want, ranging from basics like food, clothing, and electricity, to items such as furniture, electronics, and tools. Transporting all of these products uses a great deal of fuel, and leaves most localities unprepared for any interruption in supply.

There are many other examples of the costs brought about by dependence. Electricity sold from one region or country to another loses strength as it passes through many miles of lines. Newspapers are transported long distances to towns which could be publishing their own. Many people must drive numerous miles to reach the nearest grocery store.
