Scientists opposing Lake Baikal oil pipeline threatened

Russian scientists opposing construction of an oil pipeline along the bank of the World Heritage site of Lake Baikal are receiving threats for their stand against the project which they say would damage the unique wildlife of the lake.

Baikal, called the ”Jewel of Siberia”, is the world’s deepest lake and home to hundreds of endemic species, including a rare fresh water seal. An oil spill would destroy most of these species since they live in shallow water, scientists say.
