I was recently interviewed by Carolyn Baker for her “New Lifeboat Hour” podcast, to which she gave the delicious title above (thank you Carolyn!!) Carolyn is the author of numerous books, including Navigating the Coming Collapse, and Dark Gold: The Human Shadow and the Global Crisis. Carolyn’s Daily News Digest is one of my primary sources for real news, well outside mainstream media. Carolyn asked me:
And that last question leads to the podcast title. Part of my answer is about treasuring the wild nature we live in at Lone Bobcat Woods, and savoring each moment we’re privileged to be here, witnessing this extraordinary “peak moment” in Earth’s story.

Things won’t be so touchy-feely and emotionally introspective once the Hobbesian scramble kicks in. Nasty, brutish and short. Savour that.

Ten Mile Wide Chunks of Arctic Sea Ice are Disintegrating North of Svalbard
“The first cause comes in the form of record Arctic temperatures for all of 2016. As Zack Labe shows in the compelling graphic below, not only has the first half of 2016 been a record warm six months for the Arctic, it’s been a record warm half-year like no other.”

Death Valley Like Heat Predicted to Blanket the Southwest By Next Week
“Drought is again expanding over the US West. Oregon, after a very rapid April and May snowmelt, is being advised to conserve water. And with high pressure building in over the Southwest, weather models are predicting the emergence of an extreme heatwave by late this weekend. One that current guidance is indicating will bring 100 to 120 degree (F) temperatures to a wide region stretching from California’s Central Valley, through Southern California, Northwestern Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and into Southern Utah.”

Surface melting of snow and ice in Greenland explodes as temperatures soar to record levels
“This follows a record low extent of Arctic sea ice in May, and other troublesome signs that global warming is taking off in the high north.
The satellite image above of Greenland’s southwest coast shows what’s happening at the surface: numerous blue melt ponds, and the telltale grayish-blue coloration indicative of melting snow and ice. (Make sure to click on the image for the full-size version.)”

Global ethane concentrations rising again, study says
“Global emissions of ethane, an air pollutant and greenhouse gas, are on the uptick again, according to a new study led by the University of Colorado Boulder.
The team found that a steady decline of global ethane emissions following a peak in about 1970 ended between 2005 and 2010 in most of the Northern Hemisphere and has since reversed, said CU-Boulder Associate Research Professor Detlev Helmig, lead study author. Between 2009 and 2014, ethane emissions in the Northern Hemisphere increased by about 400,000 tons annually, the bulk of it from North American oil and gas activity, he said.

Ap, global warming is highest in the Arctic, which is bad news for ocean rise and the ethane feed back loops.
It will be interesting to see what all that fresh, non-salt, water will do to the Gulf Stream. Fresh water is lighter than salt water and could upset the balance, slowing or even moving the stream south, reversing the melting and turning everything in central and northern Europe into a Russian type climate. Cold! Not a good thing for Europeans. We shall see.
So many interesting events unfolding. Exciting times.

Ap, I also read somewhere that the melting of the Arctic will make shipping shit through it possible leading to increased global trade and faster economic growth. LOL! We are so fucked up!

Yeah, my states governor, a Republican who does not believe in addressing climate issues, gets all excited thinking about being the northern most east coast state and being able to take advantage of those arctic routes..
Apneaman on Wed, 15th Jun 2016 9:50 am
Juan, the route has already been used by a shipping line recently and they saved a shit load on fuel due to reduced distance. Even more ironic is the upcoming first ever 1%er cruise through the northwest passage. I smell cognitive dissonance for those deniers who are usually economic cheerleaders as well. Arctic melt down has made shipping cheaper and tourism boom – yabut it’s still a hoax eh?
This luxury cruise ship will soon sail through the Arctic. Here’s what that means for Alaska.
“This summer, an extravagant cruise ship voyage will make history, and it’s starting in Alaska.
A luxury vessel, the $350 million Crystal Serenity can carry up to 1,070 passengers and 655 crew members, and measures 820 feet long. On board, you’ll find a casino, a library, penthouses and shops with name brands like Gucci, Armani and Dior, among other countless amenities.
On Aug. 16, the ship, full of creature comforts, will set out to travel through one of the world’s harshest sea routes — the icy and isolated waters of the Northwest Passage through the Arctic Ocean. It will wind through narrow waters in far northern Canada as it sails for the first time from Seward to New York City — a 32-day voyage geared toward affluent world travelers.”
