Some Russia environmental experts warned on Thursday that a planned major oil pipeline that runs close to Lake Baikal could be ecologically dangerous and called for the project to be rerouted.
The proposed Eastern Siberia-Pacific Ocean pipeline route does not meet ecological requirements and should be modified to take alternative routes out of the lake’s catchment area, said Gennady Chegasov, an official who led a panel of experts that conducted an environmental impact study of the project for the country’s technical watchdog, the Interfax news agency reported.
