Russia Becomes a Grain Superpower as Wheat Exports Explode

Russia Becomes a Grain Superpower as Wheat Exports Explode thumbnail

Long known for its oil and gas, Russia is now moving to retake leadership in the world wheat trade it last held when the Czars ruled. In the process, it’s reshaping the market for one of the world’s most important traded food products. Last season, Russian topped the U.S. in wheat exports for the first time in decades and is expected to extend those gains to displace the EU from the top spot this year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“Russia will be among the top exporters for a long time, especially given the potential advances in productivity there.” Many growers in the U.S. and Europe have turned to higher-quality wheat to compete with the Russian supplies, which are mostly softer varieties that fetch lower prices. Some have also cut wheat plantings, which in the U.S. are expected to be the lowest next year since 1919.

Farmers trace the roots of the rebound to the Kremlin’s move a decade ago to allow land to be bought and sold freely. That set off a wave of investment in new equipment, fertilizers and expansion of farms into lands long left fallow. Government subsidies and the ruble devaluation, along with good weather, have added to harvests in recent years.

But every time there’s an upward twitch in food prices, the doomers insist short term widespread starvation is within sight.

Long term, climate change is very worrying. Short to medium term, while prices will vary, BAU food production, distribution, and consumption in line with what is “normal” seems to be the likely course, especially since GMO allow more robust, more hardy crops in many cases.

(And I know … GMO doom, although the evidence for that isn’t there either, according to mainstream organizations.)

Sure thing outcast, you sound like a bought off talking head with smug assurance of a snake oil salesman. While I agree the status quo will wobble on the likelihood of food insecurity increases by the day not decreases. Your dumbass understanding of GMO is brilliant. GMO has done NOTHING for crop productivity that could not have been achieved by other means. GMO is a gimmick and a dangerous one we are playing with the building blocks of life.

Explode huh? From what to what? Where are the numbers? Bloomberg lack the resources and ability to obtain them?

Figures a dupe like outcast would get a stiffy from a data free puff piece like this.

Less leverage for US in the world. A trend that keeps on growing.

The rise of Russia as a grain exporter is parallel with the rise of Kazakhstan and Ukraine , now refereed to as the “black sea area ” China also is now one of the biggest wheat producer .
The net result is one of abundance and wretched prices at less than 4.00$ a bushel

At least the Russians will be giving the
    middle finger to Monsanto.

So the Russian wheat should be edible.

GSR, that middle finger now goes to Bayer, a German multinational. Monsanto now specializes in potting soil.

Forbes ignorance is amazing, even by amerikan, and forbes standards. Russia never really stopped being a major wheat producer, even in the difficult days of the 80’s and 90s with all those amerikan neo-liberal saboteurs running around, unescorted and un-jailed.
