State dominance in the oil and gas sector means Russia is an energy hazard to its Group of Eight partners rather than a guarantor of secure supplies, a one-time economic adviser to President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday.
Andrei Illarionov, who served as Putin’s envoy to previous meetings of the Group
of Eight major industrialized nations, warned that the Kremlin’s growing role in the oil and gas sector runs counter to the theme of energy security Russia has selected as the focal point of the G8 summit it is hosting next week.
