Indonesia will pursue plans to build a nuclear power plant in Muria, Central Java, to help deal with looming energy shortages. Bidding for the project is scheduled to begin next year and construction in 2009. The government hopes that by 2015 it will have a reactor able to supply 1,000 megawatts of electricity.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said that Indonesia had to develop nuclear power as an alternative source of energy, to the country from its dependence on fossil fuels.
