Rescue crews evacuate oil platform

LONDON – Rescue helicopters evacuated more than 30 workers from an oil platform 125 miles off Scotland’s coast late Tuesday following a fire in the engine room, the platform operators said.

Diamond Offshore, the Houston-based owner of the Ocean Guardian platform in the North Sea, said 32 staff had been evacuated and the fire had been put out. Another 55 people still on board will not be evacuated, said Gary Krenek, Diamond Offshore senior vice president and chief financial officer.

“We have had a fire in the engine room,” Krenek told the Associated Press by telephone from Houston. “The fire is out and there are no injuries, everyone is accounted for. We have evacuated 32 people via helicopter, but there won’t be any more evacuations.”
