Ready For The Apocalypse?

Ready For The Apocalypse? thumbnail

I am not really a doomer. But I do think that societies and individuals that do not prepare for the worst (and hope for the best) are needlessly endangering themselves. Tail risk events happen. An MIT study earlier this year predicted that the global economy would collapse by 2030.

A new national survey by National Geographic and Kelton Research finds some interesting results:

Which cataclysmic movies do Americans worry might come true?

7% of Americans think the Planet of the Apes might come true? Really? 30% of Americans think that the events of Roland Emmerich’s 2012 might occur?

And how prepared do Americans think they are for such events?

But in reality — in terms of what people have actually accomplished — few people seem ready for anything:

9% of people have alternative power sources? 21% have made some attempt to grow their own food? Only 43% have a spare supply of drinking water?

Not prepared at all.

Planet of the Ape as a possible future? Last time I went outside I thought we were already there!

Ken, you are slandering apes. What exists on most American streets is something even less intelligent.

I am envious of the picture at the top as I have not reached that level of preparation…yet.

Bill, haha, my wife, who is slightly less pessimistic than I am, to put it mildly, has begun throwing away the first cans of food that have passed the date printed on them. I bought those four years ago and now I need to buy new stuff as the US cannot make up its mind about Iran.lol I insist on having six months of reserve for both of us, that’s 400 euro of tinned food we would never contemplate touching under normal circumstances. I will be the victim of ridicule, but so be it. I hope the day will never arrive that I can ridicule her back.

I do cycle the stuff I store and, every 3 months, go through them checking dates that I marked on the front or top with a black marker. Yes, it takes a few minutes extra but I can see at a glance, what is near expiration, put it on my shopping list, and use it before it is too old. BTW: You can easily go beyond the dates as long as the cans are not swelled. It just does not tastes as good.
