Postal Service Van Fire Linked to Gas Theft

SACRAMENTO, CA – A fire that destroyed three U.S. Postal vans Thursday night and damaged four others is being investigated as arson, a Sacramento Fire Department spokesman said.

The vans were among seven vehicles parked in an alley behind the post office in a shopping center in the 5900 block of South Land Park Drive.

Investigators said it appears thieves siphoned gasoline out of six of the vans and another vehicle by drilling into the vehicle’s fuel tanks just before the fire broke out at 10:35 p.m. Firefighters arrived at the scene before the flames spread to the building.

“We’ve had our share of vandalism. It’s been sporadic, but nothing to this extreme,” U.S. Postal Service spokesman Ralph Petty said.
