With the oil price tag topping the $100 mark, more and more people are starting to think about using fossil fuels more efficiently.
In January, CIBC World Markets warned Canadians to brace for $1.50-per-litre gas prices in the near future. That prospect and the threat of peak oil is getting Montrealers to think about how they can face the consequences of an energy crunch.
Post Carbon Montreal holds a meeting every month or so for its members to discuss local options for reducing their reliance on fossil fuels, including, for example, local food production.
“Every city needs to look at their food security. What’s the sustainability of feeding 2 million people on an island, when everything has to be trucked from elsewhere?” asks Derrick Tattersall, the group’s facilitator.
