Possible energy crisis threatens Namibia

Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba has urged the country’s parliament to pass the Electricity Bill before it without further delay in order to avert an “impending (energy) crisis”.

Opening the Fifth session of the Fourth parliament on Tuesday, he said Namibia was in a “dire situation” and must act swiftly to avoid a looming energy crisis.
Namibia imports much of its power supplies from Eskom of South Africa, which has served notice that it could cut supplies to Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

“Given this dire situation, we must act swiftly to ameliorate and cushion the effects of the reduced power generation capacity in our region,” Pohamba said, adding: “Power shortages can have a detrimental effect on the performance of our economy and the livelihoods of our people”.
