Plan to use waste food as biofuel

Waste food from Britain’s supermarkets could be used as fuel in an ambitious biomass project, the Guardian reports.

The renewable energy company, Infinis, could use food and other biodegradable waste items, which would otherwise thrown away, as a source of fuel.
Alan Lovell, chief executive of Infinis, told the Guardian: “We are in discussions with some of the supermarkets to use this waste as a feed stock for our generators. We would like to move down the supply chain so that we could use the waste being produced by food processing companies and the farmers too.”

Mr Lovell also said that the waste produced by just one supermarket group could provide enough power for as many as 10,000 homes.

The plan may help to reduce some of the negative effects that are being predicted in connection to the use of biofuels made from crops such as corn, soya beans, sugar cane and rape seed.
