Philippine Army HQ starts ‘carless day’ to save fuel

The Philippine Army, in a bid to curb rising fuel expenses, has instituted a carless day rule at its general headquarters (GHQ) in Fort Bonifacio, Makati City.

During carless days, all Army personnel residing inside the camp – generals included – are not allowed to use cars inside the camp. They are, instead, advised to walk or ride bicycles.

“This new regulation is first, to help in the energy crisis, and second, to help in saving energy and minimizing consumption of gasoline,” said Army Public Information Officer Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner Jr..

The Philippines, a net oil importer, is grappling with rising fuel prices due to record-setting prices of crude oil.

The high cost of petroleum has also caused a ripple effect in prices of basic commodities, with inflation hitting 11.4 percent in June, the highest in 14 years.

… “The lights may be off but the Philippine military will still be ready,” he said here Tuesday.
