Partial solar powered freighter ship sets sail from Japan

In Japan, a new type of freighter ship has recently launched from the city of Kobe that will draw part of its power for lighting and engine devices from solar panels mounted on its deck. Called the Auriga Leader, it is a car delivery freighter that was jointly created by Nippon Yusen KK and Nippon Oil Corp.

This ship is this first of its kind and was installed with 328 solar panels that will generate 40 kilowatts of electricity.
For the vessel, this means the solar energy created will help power 0.3 percent of the engine related power and 7 percent of lighting and other systems on board.
