Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz Sunday highlighting the importance of energy security and its relevance to progress said that the government has been working with a vision to meet Pakistan’s growing energy needs through exploring all types of energy including gas, oil, hydel, winds, solar and coal.
The Prime Minister said in the regional context, due to consistent high economic growth in Pakistan, India and China are spurring an unprecedented energy demand as these are the biggest markets in the region. He said, “We, therefore, need to exploit all available resources of commercially viable energy – both domestically and as well as from abroad – and demonstrate a greater commitment to energy efficiency and conservation.”
He said the energy consumption in the developing countries including Pakistan is roughly growing at double the global average rate and it is estimated to rise by more than 100 percent by 2010 from the existing levels.
About the success of the oil exploration, the Prime Minister said government has fixed a target of digging 100 oil wells per year adding that the success rate of oil from the well in Pakistan is one out of four wells.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of consumption of energy and asked the people to save energy through switching off extra lights and conserve fuel while switching off the cars, when waiting even for the VIPs.
He said there is need to educate the people through a comprehensive awareness campaign for conservation of energy.
