Almost embarrased to admit it, I work for a DOE Nat’l Lab and spend a great deal of time reviewing DOE, IEA, USGS, and the majors reports on reserves, replacement, exploration, ODAC, ASPO, Matthew Simmons, and DOE hydrogen (sick joke) research. I have friends in petrogeology and natural gas production and exploration with the majors, who feed me data off the record. In short, DOE has failed us, policy wise, and Bush is well aware of the coming crisis. We are at peak production and natural gas is close behind. Dieoff, I hope not, but it will come. Fertilizer production and biodiesel will give way to home heating and food production, and 30+% of the global population is at risk. Potable water is another major player in the future. The real risk, however, is resource wars.
Geopolitical instability is growing rapidly and polarization is starting. Who really believes China, Russia and India will stand by and watch us take the M.E. supplies? Not likely. Solutions will be found, but in the next 5-10 years depression and dieoff are highly probable. Everyone has to consider their own situation. Joke about it now, but no one will in the next three years.
