Steve Goldsmith intended to become a teacher when he started graduate school in geology at Ohio State University, but the recent hiring boom in oil and energy, and the lucrative pay that comes with such jobs, might be too tempting to pass up.
“It’s a perfect opportunity to get into this,” said Goldsmith, 32, of Yonkers, N.Y. “Now is the time.””
With oil around $70 a barrel and an aging work force that is expected to show sharp turnover in the near future, oil and energy companies are combing college campuses for graduates. They need help finding the next generation’s energy and fuel sources, and they offer attractive salaries.
