OIL crisis boon for sisal Industry

Civil strife and political instability in most oil-producing countries in the world, resulting in short supply of the commodity look set to increase demand for Tanzania’s sisal.

A sisal consultant in the Parastatal Sector Reform Commission (PSRC), Mr J. J. Ngelime, told the ‘Daily News’ in Dar es Salaam yesterday that world manufacturers using fibre for various reasons now prefer sisal to synthetic fibre, because of unreliable oil supplies in the world.
“In recent months, the demand for sisal products by foreign manufacturers has increased. For example, sisal has special use in the manufacturing of Mercedes Benz cars.

More than 20kg of sisal products are needed in the manufacture of Mercedes Benz Class C car, In the USA, the manufacturers of lifting cables are now obliged by law to use sisal cores,” the
consultant said.
