The chairman of the power regulator Ofgem has raised hopes for lower energy bills by claiming that gas supplies could be under less pressure this winter.
Sir John Mogg says he is confident new gas pipelines from Norway and the Netherlands will be up and running later this year.
His optimism conflicts with warnings from Malcolm Wicks, the energy minister, who this week said that gas would be just as scarce as last winter.
