Although the affected pipeline was shut down after the incident, some oil contaminated vegetation along the banks of the Brass river, and Eni said it was contacting experts to limit the damage to the environment.

Eni said its Nigerian Agip Oil Co. unit, which operates the pipeline, confirmed that Friday’s incident was “an act of sabotage” caused by an explosive charge placed near the river.
