The Niger Delta region of Nigeria has become a major issue of national discourse. With the release of all the hostages taken by MEND, what happens next? Will the Federal Government see reason and accelerate development of the area?
For 37 days, the nation came under global attention, not for any technological breakthrough, but because of the tension and unease the Niger Delta crisis had caused on the global energy market. Earlier in January, some four hostages were also taken by the same group which called itself Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). In a way, the group had become the “Liberation Army” of the people of the Niger Delta.
