Local consumption of refined petroleum products is expected to jump from the current level of 27 million litres per day to 40 million litres per day by 2010, the Minister of State for Petroleum, Mr Odein Ajumogobia, has said.
According to the latest edition of the “Nigeria ’s Oil and Gas ” a monthly magazine, Ajumogobia told a conference in Abuja that domestic consumption would grow alongside the economy, which is expected to grow from the current 7 per cent to a double digit figure.
The minister stressed the need to increase the nation’s refining capacity in anticipation of the expected surge in the domestic consumption of petroleum products.” By 2020, the nation will need a significant addition to the number of refineries if the products supply capacity must rise with demand. Complementing this refinery capacity increase is also a major investment in supply and distribution network to move products to the market,” he explained. Ajumogobia, however, said that the requirements needed to support the capacity expansion were enormous.
