New Energy to Move Toward Low-Carbon Economy

Schlumberger – The pursuit of renewable and low-carbon energy resources was a recurring topic of discussion here at the 2006 Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) energy conference.

Representatives from two of the major players in the global energy and climate change debates have made their respective company positions known to ONS delegates.

Lewis Gillies, BP’s managing director of hydrogen fuels, said that his company is convinced that urgent action is needed to reduce CO2 emissions and therefore is devoted to finding low-carbon energy solutions that include carbon capture and storage. “Everyday life will have to be reexamined,” Gillies stressed, pointed to the fact that 40 percent of all CO2 emissions comes from the electricity-generation process. He echoed the prediction that fossil fuels will remain the dominant source of energy for years to come, so we must develop ways to reduce the CO2 emissions that occur from their use, he said.
