Neighbours Unenthusiastic About UK Energy Review

Needless to say not everyone is impressed with the UK’s latest energy review. The much touted reactivation of the nuclear energy program is not popular in Ireland. Being just across a narrow strip of water Ireland gets anything nasty that flows out of power stations on the west coast of the UK without benefiting from the electricity produced.

A posting on Eniroireland.com pointed out. “The issues for Ireland arising from decisions made by the UK on nuclear policy are well known and long standing. Environmental consequences have arisen for Ireland from historic and ongoing discharges to the sea from Sellafield and the potential risk of a serious accident or incident at nuclear plants including Sellafield,” says Minister Roche. “The problem of Sellafield amplifies our concerns about decisions the UK Government might make in regard to using nuclear power.”
In Scotland, which leans towards an increase in renewables and is home to a large number of companies carving out a niche in this market, there are also number of people who have issues with current UK energy review.

Scotland’s opposition party, the SNP, has published its own Energy Review. One of the major findings is that Scotland produces 6 times more energy than it uses meaning the case for nuclear is not made.
