Natural gas ‘future’ for oil industry

Quadrupling Australia’s natural gas capacity could be both an environmental and economic solution to the challenges facing the industry, a major international conference will hear this week.

More than 1500 delegates from Australia and 18 other countries will this week attend the annual Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) conference in Adelaide – the largest annual industry event in the southern hemisphere.
A new report into the future of the oil and gas industry – Platform for Prosperity – will be released on the first official day of the conference tomorrow.

Belinda Robinson, chief executive of the association, said the report would outline ways to strengthen the industry in the face of critical challenges such as climate warming, declining oil production, skills shortages and escalating costs.

“We must put in place a strategic plan that ensures the nation’s oil and gas industry meets the challenges so that all Australians can reap the rewards,” she said.
