MACON, GA. – Tracey Baker was expecting to pay more this winter for heating her house with gas, but she was shocked when she opened her December natural gas bill. It was $480.
“I just sat there and cried,” Baker said. “We’ve been in the same house for about 16 years. … During the worst winter ever, (the most) we paid was $220.”
Baker’s not alone in facing sky-high heating bills.
Lucille W. Lazenby, 87, expected her heating cost to go up this winter. But the south Bibb County woman thought the most she might have to pay would be about $300. Last winter her highest bill was about $260.
Lazenby, a retired nurse, recently was billed $506.96.
“I thought, ‘What the h—?’ ” she said. “I was not warm, and it was $506.96.”
