Max Mosley believes that the predicted fuel shortage could be the catalyst to persuading grand prix teams to accept a different formula in future.
Fearing that the sport could be suspended in the event of any fuel crisis, the FIA president could urge teams to accept a fuel consumption-based formula rather than the current one based on engine size. His vision would be to give each team a controlled amount of fuel at each event and allow them to make use of it in the best way they see fit. Engine size and layout would be unrestricted, but teams would be forced to utilise the most fuel-efficient methods in order to win races. Better than that, however, he believes that switching Formula One ‘alternative’ fuels would be a further step towards safeguarding its future.
